Q
THE RUMOR MILL
Remember, you can’t always believe what you read or hear.
Airplanes are being parked: True. Many airlines around the
world (primarily in the United States) are parking airplanes
in record numbers. However, this is only partly true due to
the lack or cost of fuel. Many airplanes are being parked
because crews cannot be found to fly them.
Flight Engineers are becoming extinct: False. The truth is
that there are still a substantial number of aircraft flying
that require flight engineers. These include the 747
classics, DC-10s, DC-8s, 727s and L-1011s. Most of these
aircraft are being used for cargo operations. The global
aviation infrastructure depends on these aircraft to fill
the void in available cargo lift. There is a global shortage
of lift as it is, so there is no way that these aircraft
will be phased out anytime in the near future. Very few
people are becoming flight engineers, however, which is most
unfortunate because the position is the fastest way for a
low time pilot to get into the cockpit of a large transport
aircraft.
You shouldn’t pay for a type rating: False. Many smaller
carriers have been paying for their crews’ type ratings for
a while only to have most of each graduating class thank
them and leave. It costs an airline on average between
$25,000 and $40,000 to recruit, hire, train and type a crew
member. With the increasing cost of fuel, many airlines are
requiring crewmembers to sign contracts or pay for their own
rating. This shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone as
Southwest Airlines has had this requirement for many years.
With all of the furloughs there aren’t going to be any
flying jobs: False. Nothing could be further from the truth.
The bottom line is that prior to the recent fuel crisis,
there was a global shortage of approximately 20,000 pilots.
Many of the furloughed pilots of today are going into other
professions and will make or have already made the decision
to leave aviation. Many
of the aircraft that are being taken out of service are
going to smaller carriers and new starts. As the old saying
goes “old airplanes don’t go away, they just change
colors.”
